Art has always been one of life’s most exciting adventures to me. As a kid I was enamored with cartoons and the idea of a world so different from ours, yet somehow perfectly relatable as mine. Later, it was reading the likes of Hemingway and wondering how someone who had never met me, could write something so deeply personal to me.
These explosions of understanding borne of someone’s imagination, the living and breathing, unmoved by time and circumstance ideas that touch our spirits and move our hearts are what I love about art. Art is not in the museums or classrooms, it is within you and within I, as we breath life into everything about us.
From an early age, I yearned to express myself artistically. As a teenager, I was moved by music and went from learning punk and ska licks in garage bands to studying jazz and then classical music with ultimately going on to win two scholarships for classical bass playing. And yet despite these early successes, I felt I had not yet found my voice. I wanted something more me, more immediately visceral and wholeheartedly punching.
So, in my early 20s, when my brother called me and told me he was going to Louisiana to film a zombie movie, I knew there was no way I was going to pass up the chance for new adventure. And one sweaty summer later, I had fallen in love with the world of cinema and the excitement of a medium so infinite.
From there I worked my way up the production ladder, while simultaneously crafting my own visions through writing and directing. I had long since imagined worlds of my own making, so here was finally an arena where I could bring them to life and let others in on them completely and earnestly.
Those that know me best know that I have a strong personality bent on competence and integrity. I strive to make work I am proud of and will fight to make every project the absolute best it can be because I see it duty to do so.
I do not believe that only some are artists. I believe instead, that only some have afforded themselves the freedom of expression.
So write it in blood, because we are all artists.
